H. Chapman and R. Awdry opened the batting and batted well, scoring freely and quickly. Soon the score was 55 off 10 over with no loss of wicket. Ashton Wold C.C. vs Farcet Fen Farmers C.C. 15th June 2008

Farcet Fen Farmers won the toss and elected to field.
FFF were playing in their first game of the season. Most of the team hadn't played since last year. Opening the bowling was C. White and Z. Brown, opening the batting for Ashton was S. Nowlan and R. Awdry. The wicket was unusually bouncy and the Ashton batsmen struggled with the extra bounce. Unfortunately in the 3 over Sam Nowlan got a ball that didn't bounce much and he was out LBW for 4 bowled by C. White. This brought the Ashton skipper to the crease, H. Chapman. Both Zac Brown and Chris White were bowling well, keeping the score down. At the end of the 6th over the score was 14 for 1. This soon changed to 14 for 2 off 7 overs as Richard Awdry was bowled by Chris White for just 5. This brought D. Blatch to the crease, both Harry and Dan were looking fairly comfortable batting keeping the score ticking over. After ten overs with the score at 24 for 2, FFF decided to have a change of bowling. M. Chernick replaced C. White and A. Yardy replaced Z. Brown. Both bowlers bowled well but with out any luck. so with the score at 67 for 2 off 20 overs FF had another bowling change. M. Drury and J. Green were the new line of attack. With the fifth ball of Jamie Green's first over he took the wicket of Harry Chapman for 22, Harry was caught by M. Drury at gully, a good one handed catch above his head! The score at the end of Jamie's first over was 77 for 3 off 22. H. Chapman's departure brought N. Barnes to the middle. The following over Dan Blatch was caught by a great catch at mid on by M. Cernick. Dan departed for 30, this brought S. Palmer to the crease. Sam Palemer was around for just two overs before he was caught by M. Buckley, Sam was out for 8. Sam made way for his brother A. Palmer. With the score at 103 for 5 off 28 overs another bowling change was made, M. Buckley and M. Papworth. Marcus Papworth's first ball was the wicket of his mothers partner N. Barnes. Nigel was caught behind by the wicket keeper Cliff Mills for 13. Marcus and Mark both bowled well but with out any more luck. After 34 overs the score was 121 for 6 with Adam Palmer and Chris Wood at the crease. Chris White returned to the bowling action and from the other end R. Calaby. Chris Wood made the most of some poor bowling from Rob Calaby and 17 was scored from the over although he did take the wicket of A. Palmer, bowled for just 4. Chris White's second over back was a good one, taking two consecutive wickets the wicket of C. Wood, caught behind by Cliff Mills and bowling D. Heath for a golden duck. After the poor over by Rob Calaby, Zac Brown returned to the action with J. Ray and H. Williams at the crease. Two ball into the over and the batsmen tried for a single and a direct throw at the wicket ran J. Ray out , the throw came from Chris White to end the innings! Ashton's final score 145 all out off 37.2 overs. Bowling from FFF ~ C. White 7-1-18-4, Z. Brown 5.2-1-10-0, M. Cernik 5-0-24-0, A. Yardy 5-1-18-0, M. Drury 4-0-12-1, J. Green 4-0-15-2, M. Both bowled very well and it wasn't long before Doug Heath struck taking the wicket of Rob Calaby for 4 in the 6th over. End of the sixth over the score was 10 for 1. D. Heath then struck again in the 8th over taking the wicket of C. Mills for 1. Both opening bowlers bowled well and after 12 over they had taken three wicket between them and gone for just 23 runs. S. Palmer and J. Ray was the new line of attack and bowled their allotted 8 overs straight through going for a total of 47 runs and two wickets. The two wickets to fall were those of M. Papworth for 9 and J. Green for 1. M. Buckley batted well for FFF, he was finally caught by D. Blatch off of the bowling of N. Barnes for 30. M. Green also batted well and was bowled by N. Boughton C.C. vs Ashton Wold C.C. 14th June 2008

Ashton lost the toss and were put into the field!
The two opening batsmen started steadily and eventually the breakthrough was made by L. Papworth who bowled the number two batsman S. Hollis for 6. I. Hamilton was the other opener he continued to score well and got his 50 up in the twentieth over. Mean while wickets were falling steadily around him. I. Hamilton was in his 90's and this is when Casper decided so strike again! Ashton's beloved skipper Dan Blatch dropped Hamilton, the next ball he faced he hit for 6 and that brought up his 100. John Ray bowled well and went for just 9 off his 8 overs! The best catch also went to Dan Blatch as Chris White went for a caught and Bowled from a ball that was struck very hard and caught just Chris's thumb, this deflected the ball straight to Dan who managed to hold this one. Boughton ended up with 252 for 8 off 40 overs.
Ashton Wold's bowling ~ C. White 8-1-37-1, L. Papworth 8-0-70-1, J. Ray 8-3-9-0, D. Blatch 8-0-72-4, C. Evans 4-0-37-0, M. Papworth 4-0-46-2.

After tea Ashton had some runs to get. Opening the batting was C. Evans and M. Slote. Things started well but unfortunately in the third over Melvin Slote was caught for naught! M. Buckley then joined Clive out in the middle. they were keeping the score board ticking over nicely. After 12 overs Ashton were 74 for 1.... things were looking on track! But then in the 12th over Mark Buckley was given out LBW for 19. This brought Ashton Wolds oldest player to the crease, at a sprightly 71 Jeremy Firth scored a swift 22 before being bowled! Shortly after Jeremy's departure R. Awdry followed suit he was out for a duck, LBW! D. Blatch joined Clive Evans in the middle and in the 25th over Clive was caught for 66. The score on 129 for 5 off 25 overs. Still looking good but wickets were not in Ashton's favour. When Clive was out D. Ward stepped up to the crease. Dia Ward and Dan Blatch put on 55 for the 6th wicket when Dan was caught for 39. M. Papworth joined Dia Ward in the middle. With the score at 184 for 6 off 36 overs. In the 37h over Dia Ward was caught for 16. The following ball C. White, Dia's replacement, was caught by the same fielder in the same pace for a duck. That brought the score to 184 for 8 off 37 overs. J. Ray and M. Papworth scored six runs off the 38th over bringing the score to 192 off 38 overs. In the 39 J. Ray was run out for 1. L. Papworth joined his brother at the crease, they put on another 10 runs until L. Papworth was given LBW off the first ball of the 40th over. Final Score 202 all out off 39.1 overs.

Bowling from Boughton ~ S. Jackson 8-0-48-2, G. Mabbot 6-0-30-0, I. Hamilton 5.1-0-33-2, D. Evans 8-1-33-2, R. Steff 8-0-22-1, Barnett 4-1-21-2.

Hall Cup Match vs Folksworth C.C. 8th June 2008

After all the rain we had during the week but was sunny for the weekend which meant that the pitch was another pudding!
Ashton Wold lost the toss and were put in the field.
Chris Wood and Dan Blatch opened the bowling. Chris and Dan bowled quite tight without any luck. Folksworth went for 19 runs off the first 10 overs.
After Chris Wood had finished his spell he was fielding in his beloved position of midwicket did a cracking piece of ground fielding and ran out one of the openers to take the first wicket
Sam Palmer came on and bowed tight along side John Ray. Then Adam Palmer came on and he got the 2nd wicket of the other opener who was caught by Dan Blatch at short fine leg. Ray and Adam Palmer set about destroying the middle order and took between them the next 4 wickets. Adam 3 and Ray 2 in total. A. Buckley came on and took 2 wickets and then there was a late flurry of runs mainly from the Folksworth Skipper to get the innings back on track. Top score was D.Olham who got 28 and the Folksworth skipper Lankfer made 22 not out.Folksworth final score was 102 for 8 off 40 overs. Ashton bowling ~ Blatch 0-23 off 7, Wood 0-11 off 7, S. Palmer 0-6 off 6, J. Ray 2-4 off 8, A. Palmer 3-24 off 6, A. Buckley 2-17 off 5, M. Buckley 0-6 off 1.

Harry Chapman (6) and Sam Nowlan (12) got us off to a steady start before we had a collapse but Mark (44 not out) stood firm and batted till the end even though wickets fell at regular intervals and with small help at the end from his brother Andrew (8 not out) took us over the line. The middle order all chipped in with single figure scores. The bowling from Folksworth was very tight and they kept taking wickets at regular intervals . The Folkswoth opening bowler Heath took 3-19 and S.Esmel took 3-35 but the tightest bowling from Folksworth was the Leg Spinner D.Olham ( 1-5 off 8 overs) who also top scored in the Folksworth innings. And one thing to note was extras (16) was the 2nd highest scorer in the Ashton Wold Innings. Ashton Wold's final score 105 for 8.
Ashton Wold won by 2 wickets.

Ashton Wold C.C. vs Orton Park C.C. 1st June 2008

The wicket was still soft form all the rain we during the week and the bit of rain that we had Saturday night/Sunday morning. The toss was won by Orton Park and they elected to bat.

The batting was difficult on the slow wicket, which was made even more difficult by the good bowling by the opening pair of C. White and C. Wood, with just 15 runs coming off the first 10 overs. In the Second over Orton Park lost their first wicket with a good piece of fielding by C. White, who with a direct throw at the stumps run out A. Jackson for just 2 runs. I Hancock and M. Kelly stood firm at the crease until the 17 over when C. Wood caught his first of three catches off J. Ray's bowling, which dispatched M. Kelly for 13. A few overs later D. Blatch struck the stumps of M. Durham which bowled him out for 14. J. Ray took his second wicket when opener I. Hancock was caught on the boundary by S. Nowlan, I. Hancock was out for 30. The Ray/Wood combination soon struck again and then again. Dispatching A. Taylor and J. Crick in quick succession. J. Ray took a total of 4 wicket off his 8 overs. Dan Blatch lived up to his nickname Casper, when he dived out of the way of a catch and then at the last moment put his hands out to try and catch it, the ball went sailing straight through him and he landed with a thud as he hit the floor. The funniest moment of the cricketing year so far! C. Wood finished off his overs taking two wickets, first one was C. Banks who was caught by M. Taylor for 21, the other was the very last ball of the innings when he bowled T. Hancock for 0. Orton Park final score was 112 for 8 off 40 overs. Bowling from Ashton ~ C. White 8-2-20-0, C. Wood 7-2-16-2, S. Palmer 5-1-14-0, J. Ray 8-2-24-4, D. Blatch 8-2-19-1, A. Palmer 4-0-12-0.

Ashton went out to bat after tea feeling fairly positive, but it didn't start that way. In the forth over H. Chapman was caught and bowled by A. Jackson for just 8. Leaving S. Nowlan and N. Barnes to continue batting and they sure did. Sam Nowlan hitting his second adult fifty. His second of the season. N. Barnes also batted well. Sam Nowlan finishing on 54 not out and Nigel Barnes finished on 34 not out. Despite good bowling from Orton Park the game was over on the last ball of the 33rd over. Ashton finished on 114 for 1 off 33 overs. Bowling from Orton Park ~ D. Tilley 6-2-13-0, A. Jackson 6-0-19-1, Z. Scotting 4-0-16-0, H. Meichan 4-0-17-0, I. Hancock 7-1-21-0, T. Hancock 5-0-12-0, J. Crick 1-0-8-0.

Ashton won by 9 wickets.

Ashton Wold C.C.vs Southwick C.C. 31st May 2008

The weather was glorious but the wicket wasn't. With all the rain we had throughout the week it left the wicket very wet and soft. Ashton won the toss and elected to field.

It started well for Ashton with quick wickets falling for Southwick. After 10 overs Southwick were 20 for 3, with the first wicket falling to D. Blatch in the second over. Shortly followed by 2 wickets for C. White in the 5th and 7th overs. Good bowling and good fielding kept Southwick's score down on a pitch that was hard to bat on. J. Ray came into the bowling attack and picked up to wickets in his 8 overs. S. Fox for Southwick was batting quite well until C. Evans came into the attack and picked up his first wicket of the season on his first ball. Clive Evans finished off Southwick in the 34th over picking up his third wicket of the day. Southwick final score was 80 all out off 33.4 overs. Bowling from Ashton ~ C. White 8-3-17-2, D. Blatch 5-1-14-1, S.Nowlan 4-0-8-0, J. Ray 7-2-21-2, C. Evans 7.4-1-15-3, M. Buckley 2-0-4-1.

Ashton also found it hard to bat on the soft wet wicket. Runs were coming few and far between. at 8 overs Ashton were 12 for no loss, however in the 9 Ashton lost two wickets and scored just a single. With Southwick bowling well Ashton were finding it hard to score runs. N. Barnes was bowled for a duck which brought the scores to 16 for 3 off 11 overs. With two new batsmen at the crease Ashton started to look a bit more comfortable scoring a couple of runs here and there just keeping the score ticking over. Unfortunately in the 26th over H. Chapman was caught for 16. With the score at 49 for 4. Then in the same over S. Nowlan joined M. Buckley. Sam was also caught in the same over for a duck. So at the end of the 26th over Ashton were 49 for 5. With the fall of Sam's wicket in brought C. Evans to the crease, Clive and Mark score 10 between them off the next 5 overs but in the 31st over Mark was bowled for 20. D. Blatch then arrived at he crease, with the score at 59 for 6. With just 22 needed for the victory. Clive and Dan finished off the innings in the 36th over. Dan finished 15 not out and Clive on 14 not out. Final Score was 84 for 6 off 35.3 overs. Bowling from Southwick ~ D. Shacklock 8-2-9-3, S. Fox 8-2-12-0, R. Fox 8-1-22-1, R. Head 8-1-18-2, P. Roe 2-0-8-0, J. Burdett 1.3-0-13-0.
